The Sentencing Council is currently consulting on a new guideline for a Reduction in Sentence for a Guilty Plea. This proposed new guideline includes many controversial proposals such as defendants only receiving a one third reduction in sentence if on either way cases they plead guilty at the first hearing in the magistrates court. Thereafter the reduction is substantially reduced and hence will affect the advice given to clients charged with serious drugs, sex and fraud offences.
We will be addressed by a newly appointed judicial member of the Sentencing Council to explain the reasoning for these proposals but also more importantly listen to our feedback as this is still in the consultation stage. Come and hear more about what may be the most significant development in sentencing for many years and which will impact significantly on the advice given to defendants especially in magistrates courts.
The consultation closes on 5th May and can be found by following this link https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Reduction-in-sentence-for-a-guilty-plea-consultation-paper-web.pdf
After the talk there will be an opportunity to socialise in the bar at HJA..
