Re: YJLC Summit 2026 (Waitlist), Membership Offer & Youth Justice Updates

We’re pleased to share details of the upcoming YJLC Summit 2026: More Harm Than Good: Children in the Criminal Legal System, taking place on 30 June 2026 at King’s College London. Although this popular event is now fully booked, there is still an opportunity to join the waiting list. We strongly encourage members working in youth justice or representing children to register their interest. The summit will bring together practitioners from across the sector, with a programme focused on practical approaches to improving outcomes for children. It promises to be a valuable and engaging day, featuring expert speakers and excellent networking opportunities.

Update on forthcoming MoJ changes

Members should also be aware of wider developments following the Government’s recent Youth Justice White Paper. As outlined in the announcement: Youth Justice overhaul to keep streets safer

The proposed reforms place a strong emphasis on:

  • Earlier intervention
  • More targeted support for children
  • Addressing the root causes of offending

Key proposals include:

  • Introduction of new Youth Intervention Courts
  • Strengthened approaches to rehabilitation and supervision
  • Greater focus on preventing reoffending through coordinated, multi-agency support

These reforms also aim to modernise the system, ensuring it responds to emerging risks such as online harms, exploitation, and increasing vulnerability among children.

Specialist training developments

An Expert Advisory Group has been established to explore the introduction of mandatory training for child criminal advocacy. The Group will provide recommendations to the Ministry of Justice on:

  • Specialist training requirements
  • A potential framework for recognising this work as a registered specialism

The LCCSA Committee is participating in these discussions and will share further updates in due course.

Additional guidance

Members may also find it helpful to refer to the SRA’s guidance on best practice in the Youth Court:

Taken together, these developments underline the growing importance of specialist expertise when representing children in the criminal justice system. Resources such as YJLC membership are likely to become increasingly valuable. We are also currently arranging training with YJLC and will provide further details shortly.

We hope you will find value in joining the waiting list and exploring the membership offer.
