Where a false allegation was made to the police leading to a criminal investigation with the possible consequences of detention, arrest, charge or prosecution, and where there was intent that the allegation be taken seriously, then that allegation could properly be described as an act of perverting the course of justice. The mischief at which the offence was aimed existed whether or not the allegation was capable of identifying individuals. * Application for leave to appeal to the House of Lords pending.
