Private security firm Reliance was hired to escort prisoners to court despite having the weakest capacity of all the firms bidding for the work, it emerged today.

An Audit Scotland report revealed that Reliance was ranked third out of three firms that tendered for the contract in terms of its ability to do the work.
The firm has been fiercely criticised over mistaken releases of prisoners since it took over escort duties in April under a £126 million contract.
