[2008] EWCA Crim 667

The premeditated carrying and use of a knife to inflict an intentional stab wound was a very serious offence and the need for the courts to take account of public concern and deter such offending by imposing condign or deterrent sentences was obvious. There was a shortage of recent authority on the level of sentence to be imposed, but a guideline starting point of eight years' custody and a sentencing range of between seven and 10 years' custody was recommended by the Sentencing Guidelines Council.
