Michael Spencer, QC, head of the largest civil and common law chambers in London, announced yesterday that he had resigned as a Recorder and deputy High Court judge because of the Hunting Act.

He is the first member of the part-time judiciary to resign in protest over the new legislation, though he said he knew of others in the High Court and the Court of Appeal who would step down if they could afford to.
