Legal Aid

Permanent scar

I was amazed by the comments from the Legal Services Commission (LSC) that our actions were wrong because they could leave some of the most vulnerable in society without assistance at police stations or courts for the period of any action. Does the LSC not realise that the Carter proposals will have this effect on a permanent basis?

I am particularly galled that, according to news reports, the Prime Minister will call in the best lawyers in the land to assist him in the ?cash-for-honours? inquiry. The proposals endorsed by his government will mean that no one of reasonable means will have access to a well-qualified, reasonably rewarded and motivated solicitor to provide representation at police stations or courts.
