Oaths, religious or not, are a statement that you are telling the truth

Last Saturday, the conference of the Magistrates? Association rejected a proposal to abolish the practice of witnesses swearing an oath on the Bible and other holy books. They should have listened more carefully to Ian Abrahams, a Bristol magistrate, who proposed the motion and who affirmed that: ?More and more I see people shrug their shoulders or say ?whatever? when asked to take [a religious oath]?.
