Level Up is an organisation campaigning for an end to the imprisonment of pregnant women - Pregnancy in Prison - Level Up (welevelup.org)

As you will have seen, the inquest into the death of the baby at Bronzefield prison in 2019 concluded last Friday. The coroner ruled that the state seriously failed the mother - a Black woman who was left to give birth alone in her cell, her cell buzzer calls ignored by guards. More info from The Independent here. The case is a harrowing example of the risks of incarcerating pregnant women.

Level Up have launched a survey for lawyers to contribute their experience and thoughts re: a new mitigating factor for sentencing pregnant women. The Sentencing Council are due to begin a consultation on the sentencing of pregnant women in late 2023. Level Up are gathering evidence from criminal law professionals to submit to the consultation.
