GARETH OWEN JONES (BY HIS MOTHER & LITIGATION FRIEND MAUREEN CALDWELL) (Appellant) v FIRST TIER TRIBUNAL (SOCIAL ENTITLEMENT CHAMBER) (Respondent) & CRIMINAL INJURIES COMPENSATION AUTHORITY (Interested Party) (2011)
PUBLISHED April 12, 2011
 EWCA Civ 400
The First-tier Tribunal had erred when upholding a decision by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority not to award compensation to a driver injured after a suicidal person ran onto a dual carriageway. In particular, the tribunal had erred in assuming that an intention to commit suicide was necessarily inconsistent with a deliberate intention to cause harm and was not therefore a crime of violence.
