Launch event for Bar Reference Group at Bar Council offices
Chambers had the opportunity to talk to senior LSC managers about key issues at the first Bar Reference Group meeting. Among the issues discussed were:
- bill processing
- changes to legal aid
- LSC transition to the Legal Aid Agency
- civil online working
- the contract manager pilot for the Bar
The event was chaired by Jan Luba QC. Our commitment to working in partnership with the Bar was stressed by LSC chief executive, Matthew Coats, at the event on 24 October 2012 in the Bar Council?s offices in High Holborn, London.
Matthew said: ?I really enjoyed the chance to meet with members of the Bar and listen to their views.
?This ongoing dialogue helps us to understand the issues which are affecting barristers and chambers.
?It also helps us to identify areas where we can work together to make improvements for both parties.?
He was joined by LSC director of commissioning and contract management, Hugh Barrett, and senior managers who made a series of presentations.
Updates on progress made by case management teams in meeting processing targets were provided by the LSC?s head of high cost cases, David Keegan, and head of crime operations, Nick Poulter.
They also provided guidance to assist chambers in making sure that claims are submitted correctly, first time, every time.
The expansion of the Bar contract management pilot, to include five dedicated contract managers, was outlined by head of contract management, John Sirodcar. The pilot scheme was launched to improve working between the LSC and the Bar. The new contract managers will now be working with around 250 chambers.
Civil online working
The benefits to chambers of the LSC?s new client and case management system were outlined by implementation manager, Kelly Ellis. This system is being trialled by providers in the north east.
Features explained to chambers included:
- the ability to submit claims electronically and
- systems enabling registered barristers to view cost limitations online to avoid claim rejections.
