A man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend 15 times in a drunken rage after she ended their relationship has been jailed for seven years.

Maidstone Crown Court heard Kelvin Gray, 46, carried out a "terrifying and frightening" attack on Sonja Wraight.

Gray, of St Agnes Gardens in Sheerness, Kent, stabbed Ms Wraight when she threw his belongings out, the court heard.

He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was jailed on Monday.

The prosecution said Gray had moved out of the home the couple shared, but moved back in as a lodger and made it clear he wanted to resume the relationship, resulting in Ms Wraight asking him to leave.

The court was told Gray produced a lock-knife after drinking half a bottle of vodka and three cans of lager during an argument that began when Ms Wraight threw his mobile phone and car keys out of the house on 29 January.

Eleanor Laws, prosecuting, said Gray stabbed his ex-lover in the back, side and right breast, then dialled 999 to admit what he had done.

Ms Wraight opened the door and screamed for help, only to be dragged back in by her hair, and was taken to hospital after her daughter arrived to find her on the floor, covered in blood, Miss Laws added.

Michael Haynes, defending, said Gray had - before the attack - been admitted to hospital with depression after the death of his mother and losing custody of his 10-year-old son, who had returned to Gray's ex-wife.

Jailing Gray, Judge Andrew Patience said: "This is a terrible, wicked offence for which you must receive a very substantial prison sentence indeed, not only to punish you but as a warning to others."
