The files of Whitehall stretch for miles. The National Archive at Kew has 112 miles of the things and there's a further 16 miles of storage in the Cheshire salt mines. For years, two locked rooms in the basement of the Cabinet Office held a cache of secret papers that were not released to the public until 2013.
