Tagging to replace prison for those awaiting trial

People accused of serious and violent offences, including rape and murder, are to be tagged pending trial under a pilot scheme.

Those refused bail will be included in the scheme, which is expected to run in Glasgow and Stirling from April as an alternative to sending them to prison on remand. The measure is designed both to reduce cases of reoffending among accused awaiting trial and curb jail overcrowding, which is partly caused by the rise in remand prisoners.
