Scandal that could not scupper press freedom

One of the biggest inquiries ever mounted by Scotland Yard and a judicial process costing many millions of pounds resulted yesterday in the acquittal of Rebekah Brooks, the former News International chief. Dozens of journalists have been arrested - with many still on bail - and a judge-led inquiry has been staged into the entire industry. In addition, one of the country's oldest publications has been closed and our politicians have conspired with a group of disgruntled celebrities in an attempt to impose the first statutory controls on newspapers for more than 300 years.
