[2013] NICA 73
Although the suspension of a sentence of four years' imprisonment for causing an explosion likely to endanger life had been unduly lenient owing to the need for sentences to deter sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, the offender's subsequent conduct meant that it was inappropriate for the court to exercise its discretion to vary it. It was an exceptional circumstance that the offender had become a mentor, using his own criminal behaviour and subsequent conviction as a means of discouraging other susceptible youths from similar conduct.
