Where there was a conflict between the accused and complainant's accounts it was necessary for the police to be in possession of at least one witness statement in the English Language before preferring charges. There was no breach of s.42(1) Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 in authorising further detention whilst a statement was translated.
