Prevention, not detention

Listening to young people talk candidly about why they are in custody - some having committed very serious crimes, others prolific offenders - may lead many viewers of a Channel 4 documentary to be shown tomorrow night to conclude that locking up more young offenders sooner rather than later, and for longer, will save us a great deal of grief in the long run.

This is not the solution. If you listen very carefully to what the young people say about their lives, you'll see that in addition to causing trouble, these young people are highly troubled and traumatised.
