[2012] EWHC 533 (QB)

Where a young offender, who was a British citizen, had stated his nationality to be Somalian to officers at a young offender institution, the prison officers had failed to take appropriate steps to have his nationality ascertained by referring him to the Immigration and Nationality Directorate. However, the offender was not entitled to damages for the extra three months he spent in detention rather than on home detention curfew as a result of the prison officers' failings.
