Ian McEwan’s literary judgment shows us human side of the law

There are surprisingly few distinguished novels about judges and judging. Ian McEwan’s The Children Act (Jonathan Cape) is a very welcome addition to that class. It is a literary judgment that tells us more about the legal system and those who administer it than The Weekly Law Reports and a shelf of textbooks.
