Lord Woolf, the Lord Chief Justice, is expected to announce that he will retire as Britain[base ']s most senior judge within weeks of the election.

The timing of his departure concides with the passage through Parliament of the Government[base ']s legal reforms, with the Constitutional Reform Act reaching the statute book on March 24.
