There are some controversies you instinctively dodge. For me, one was Chedwyn Evans's proposed return to football. I do not follow football and had no idea how high a status this now-convicted rapist might hold. Neither of my own children were footie fans; the only comparison I did have was of spending endless 1993 school runs explaining stuff to Michael Jackson fans during the child-molesting allegations: the presumption of innocence, the nature of evidence, and whether financial deals were ethical. So I sympathise with parents of ardent young Sheffield United fans as they talked about Evans and what comes next.
