"The latest crime statistics published today show the ongoing determination and dedication of the service and its staff to reduce crime, deal with anti-social behaviour and protect the public.

"Crime recorded by police in England and Wales fell by four percent last year at a time when forces are achieving significant cash savings and efficiencies. Most notably homicide has reduced by 14 percent compared to last year's figures. In addition robbery fell by two percent, burglary by four per cent, theft of motor vehicles by 13 per cent, violence against the person by seven percent and grievous bodily harm by nine percent.

"The service has also continued to focus on driving down anti-social behaviour. There were over half a million fewer reported incidents compared to last year.

"Public confidence in the police has also increased, 62 percent of people believe the police in their local area are doing a good or excellent job compared last year to 59 percent. There was also a significant increase in the proportion of people who agree that the police are dealing with the things that matter to people in their community.

"The service is determined to continue to build on the good work reflected in these publications and the results are a credit to those officers and staff who have faced the challenge of major efficiencies while continuing to tackle crime in our communities."
