The loss of Butler-Sloss

It is a matter of deep regret that Baroness Butler-Sloss has felt compelled to step down as head of the recently announced inquiry into historic sex-abuse allegations. As we argued last week, the idea that she would be unable to be impartial because of accusations about her brother's involvement in past investigations was an insult to such a distinguished jurist. It also fed into the conspiracy-theorist narrative that no one within the establishment can be trusted to act with integrity.
