Solicitors are being encouraged not to leave practising certificate renewals to the last minute if they want them to be processed as quickly as possible.

Law Society chief executive Desmond Hudson has today written to local law societies pointing out that the volume of users presently logging on to the MySRA system is far below capacity, but will rise as the 14 December deadline nears.

As of Monday this week, 5,267 applications had been completed and a further 7,972 applications started. The system could currently accommodate far more users, Hudson stressed.

He said: 'I would like to enlist your help to encourage colleagues to commence and complete their PC renewal well before the closure date, so as not to risk capacity problems inherent in a last-minute rush.

'Members may find the system works faster at a time when it is undersubscribed - such as now.'
