Fear of the needle is a "medical reason" justifying refusal to give a blood sample to the police in the absence of medical evidence to the contrary. The clarification of the Warren formula is now documented in the House of Lords decision DPP v Jackson : Stanley v DPP (1998) Times, July 30, 1998.
