In assessing the effect of hostile interventions by a judge on the fairness of a trial and the safety of convictions, the interventions had to be viewed in the context of the trial as a whole. While the judge could be criticized, taken as a whole the interventions had not led to such unfairness as to cause doubt over the safety of the verdicts.
