Convictions for conspiracy to contravene the Customs and Excise Management Act 1979 were unsafe where the hearing had been lengthy and disrupted, the summing-up had failed to direct the jury as to the issues of fact it was required to determine, and there had been a break of 17 days during the jury's deliberations.
