Private firms are to be invited to run three Kent prisons, which between them hold nearly 2,000 inmates and have a combined annual budget of £37m.

The Prison Service will also be able to enter a bid to retain control of Elmley, Standford Hill and Swaleside prisons, all on the Isle of Sheppey.
The announcement was made by prisons minister Paul Goggins on Tuesday.
