Prisoners are being held in police station cells because there is not enough room in English and Welsh jails.

The prison population has risen to a record high of 77,600 in the past two weeks, leaving London and the West Midlands particularly short of space.
The move came as it emerged the Home Office may consider releasing thousands of inmates early to ease overcrowding.
