'Goodnight, all," said Dixon of Dock Green at the end of every episode - for he was the very model of a courteous policeman. A little less realistic, perhaps, than the sweaty hard men of The Bill or the swearing toughs of The Sweeney. But Police Constable George Dixon was a throwback to an earlier, gentler time when people not only wanted to watch well-mannered coppers on TV but probably expected them to behave like that in real life, too.
