The heavy iron gates of Chavenage House in Gloucestershire are shut for winter, padlocked against intruders. Up the gravelled drive beyond, every sash window in the Cotswold stone facade bears a sticker warning burglars of a security system. Yet nobody thinks either defence will prove very effective.
