Scotland is to become the first part of the UK where it will be a criminal offence to prevent a mother breastfeeding her child in public.

MSPs last night agreed by 103 votes to 13 to impose fines of up to £2,500 on any café, restaurant, pub or shop in Scotland which bans breastfeeding on its premises. The law, which also applies to public transport, will now receive the Royal Assent and will be on the statute book early next year.
