Europe's first justice commissioner, Viviane Reding (pictured), was one of four commissioners to resign on 1 July after winning seats in the European parliamentary elections.

Johannes Hahn, commissioner for regional policy, will take caretaker responsibility for her justice, fundamental rights and citizenship portfolio. Reding led efforts to develop a common EU justice policy under the Lisbon Treaty. Sweden is understood to be targeting the justice portfolio for its nominee to the new commission.
