The court quashed as excessive a sentence of five years' detention with a five-year extension period imposed on a vulnerable young offender who had pleaded guilty to two thefts and one attempt to choke, suffocate or strangle his great-grandmother with intent. The appropriate sentence was four years' detention with a three-year extension period.
