[2012] EWCA Crim 2113
Offences of perverting the course of justice would almost always attract an immediate custodial sentence. In the instant case, where the prime offender had damaged his own car, blamed the damage on somebody else, and paid a friend to pretend to be an independent witness, neither a three-year starting point for him, nor a 21-month starting point for the friend, was manifestly excessive; the friend was entitled to a greater discount than one-third because of his readiness to give evidence against the prime offender.
