QCs will no longer be chosen by the lord chancellor on the basis of "secret soundings" with senior judges and other prominent legal figures under a new, more transparent selection system unveiled yesterday.

The old system for choosing the elite cadre of advocates in England and Wales was frozen in 2003 after the Office of Fair Trading branded it uncompetitive, and no QCs have been appointed since.
