New record set in inmate numbers

Scotland's prison population rose to an all-time high during the year between 2002 and 2003.

The average daily number of people held in jail rose from 6,404 to 6,524, the Prison Statistics Scotland 2003 show.
A new record was also set for the number of women in jail. The total was up seven per cent from 277 to 297.
