Fear over plan to close jail unit

PUBLISHED April 16, 2004

Women at a Cheshire prison say they are terrified by plans to close a unit for vulnerable inmates. Officials at Styal Prison are considering shutting the wing which houses women who are likely to be attacked by other prisoners.

One inmate spoke to the BBC from inside the prison pleading for the unit to be saved. But a spokesman for the Prison Service said they were looking at whether the space could be put to better use.
