As we observed earlier this week, the announcement of a new mega-inquiry into allegations of historic child abuse in every institution from Parliament to the Church will almost certainly produce more heat than light. Far better for the police to investigate specific allegations, compile the evidence against individuals and seek to have them prosecuted, convicted and punished. The dangers of the course of action adopted were immediately apparent yesterday, when the choice of Baroness Butler-Sloss to head a panel of experts to review how these matters have been handled was challenged as inappropriate.
