Blunkett 'Not as Tough as Perceived on Sentencing'

The public perception that Home Secretary David Blunkett is much tougher than the judges in setting minimum jail terms for murder was exposed today as being largely a myth.

Mr Blunkett, who has now been stripped of his power to set minimum tariffs for mandatory life sentence prisoners, in fact followed the recommendations of the judiciary in the majority of cases, said Lord Woolf, the Lord Chief Justice.
