The courts that time forgot

PUBLISHED May 19, 2005

Although the coroners' system has stayed pretty much unchanged for more than 700 years, that is no reason for leaving it as it is. I am not in favour of change for change's sake: I supported the Government's decision to keep the office of Lord Chancellor, even though it is significantly older.

However, it does seem bizarre that a statute passed in 1275 should still be the basis on which we investigate sudden or unexpected deaths in England and Wales.
