Keir Starmer QC, the former director of public prosecutions, has received an honorary doctorate from the University of East London's School of Law. Starmer spoke about the need for social mobility and the importance of students from minority ethnic and non-traditional academic backgrounds entering the profession.

'There were no lawyers in my family,' he said. 'My father was a toolmaker and my mother a nurse, and I was lucky enough to be appointed a QC and later DPP. There is not enough diversity within the profession and the judges and lawyers within the sector do not truly reflect the society we live in today.'
