The Solicitors Regulation Authority has begun searching for seven new individuals to join its decision-making team.

The regulator is recruiting for three new board members who can work for a commitment of a minimum of 20 days a year. Annual pay will be £10,000 plus expenses.

According to an advertisement placed in The Sunday Times yesterday, the ideal candidates will be a solicitor from a 'major commercial firm with overseas operations', an in-house lawyer or general counsel and a lay person.

Four more people - two lay members and two solicitors from any sector - are needed for the equality, diversity and inclusion committee for a minimum of six days a year, paid £500 per day.

The SRA states that it is seeking people who care about justice and the rule of law, the development of legal services and the profession, access to justice and 'proportionate' regulation.

The SRA board consists of 15 members: seven solicitors and eight lay people.

In a welcome letter to potential candidates, SRA chair Charles Plant said: 'We are at a critical time in the evolution of the legal services market in England and Wales and we are undertaking work to complete the implementation of the [Legal Services] Act, to embed fully proactive risk-based and outcomes-focused regulation and to address the issues we face in the delivery of our regulatory objectives.'
