What's the point of criminal sentencing, justice or revenge? New sentencing guidelines - open for consultation until January 2015 - has brought the question back to the fore again. "Lighter jail sentences for muggers" is the headline, with offenders at the lower end given a community service order or a short custodial sentence, capped at two years. The existing guidelines suggest a three-year period.
