Convictions for 16 counts of cruelty to a person aged under 16 were unsafe where the Court of Appeal determined that statements by two of the complainants, in which they retracted the evidence they had given at trial, were admissible as fresh evidence, might be true and affected all the counts of which the defendant was convicted.
