Whilst the offence of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence almost inevitably attracted a custodial sentence there was no universal proposition to that effect. There were exceptional cases calling for the delicate exercise of the court's discretion where a non-custodial sentence could be imposed.
