Deterrent sentences in the region of up to 10 years would be entirely appropriate for prison officers committing prison security offences for personal gain. A corrupt prison officer was much better placed than an outsider to find ways of defeating a prison security system and therefore the deterrent function of sentencing as articulated in the Criminal Justice Act 2003 s.142(1)(b) played a prominent part in the sentencing of prison staff for breach of prison security rules.
