A conviction for cruelty to a child under 16 years of age was safe where a finding of no case to answer would have usurped the role of the jury and where, despite minor inadequacies in the judge's directions, the issue as to whether the defendant was wilfully neglectful and failed to take adequate steps to assist a victim with injuries she was at risk of suffering and those she had already sustained was properly before the jury.
