Changes of sentencing practice and tariff sentencing were not retrospective, and therefore where a discretionary life sentence was manifestly excessive and so reduced, the proportion set as the specified period to be served would remain as it was at the time of the original sentence provided the trial judge had used his discretion within the statutory limits.
